Welcome to our Class!

4-7-2012

Oh My! Time is really flying as we are heading full speed into the final stretch of the school year. We have many more amazing things to learn, and quite a few wonderful field trip experiences to have. Please make sure you are checking your child's folder each day to keep updated with important dates and announcements. This week has us beginning our last Unit for the year. We will study the Human body. There are many fun and hands-on activities planned for this unit, so I think it will be  great way to end the year. We will also be finishing up our novel groups, and start the final novel of the year in the next week or so. The class is working oh so hard to complete both our personal Student Treasures book, nad one we are doing as a class. I am so pleased to see the amazing ideas these kids come up with. If you haven't had a chance to order a re-print of the book, please send in the form by Friday. We will have an Author's Tea to share these books when they arrive in May. I will send home a final date after the books are delivered to us. As the weather gets warmer, sometimes students become a little less "engaged" with the idea of school. However, we have many things left to do before the end of the year, so please help us keep students focused and on track. I hope everyone has a great Easter!

Love,

Ms. B.

Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow! Goodness, we have lots and lots of the white stuff everywhere. I hope everyone enjoyed the unexpected Friday holiday. This week we will be working hard to complete many projects and use all the reading stratagies we've learned to prepare for the upcoming TCAP assessments. We are also looking towards Valentine's Day. It is on a Tuesday, so this doesn't leave us very long for a party. I will be sending home a class list and a sign up sheet for the party. Please remember if your child chooses to do Valentines, they must send one for each person in the class. Also, as you can imagine, with over 1,200 students in our school, it is impossible for our office staff to deliver flowers, balloons or any other items sent to class. Please save those wonderful treats until students get home. Hopefully most of you have chosen a time for parent/teacher conferences. The early times are filled up, so please choose one that starts at 4:40 PM or later. Please see the newsletter for more details. Enjoy the snow and some warm hot chocolate to go with it.

1-30-12

It is Spirit Week again! This is another great chance to show off how proud you are to be a Bulldog. A flyer with the theme for each day went home with students on Thursday. Tomorrow is class color day and we chose...orange. Dig out those Halloween digs and support our class. In addition to themed days, we will have an all-school assembly on Friday in the morning. It is hard to beleive that our year is almost 2/3 of the way over, and parent/teacher conferences are just around the corner. A sign up sheet will go home today, so please check your schedule and let me know a 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice time for us to meet. Third graders will be taking the state mandated TCAP assessment for Reading on Feb. 28th and 29th. We are reviewing all the skills we've learned so students feel prepared and confident to "show what they know". I feel very proud of what they have learned and the hard work they put in each and every day, and I am sure it will reflect this on our tests. Miss Carter has been working hard teaching our 3rd grade Math and our unit on electricity. Look for her to continue to add more teaching duties throughout Feb. and March. Please know you can reach either one of us by phone or e-mail. I hope you have a great, spirit filled week!

1-4-12

Welcome Back! I hope everyone had a great break and got to spend some time doing things with family and friends. Ms. Carter has joined us and is jumping right into the routine. We have already been hard at work this week with learning some techniques to make accurate inferences, how to write more fluent and expanded sentences, how to identify solid figures using Geometric vocabulary, and some ways to read non-fiction books. We are trying to finish up our unit on Space in the next two weeks, and then head into electricity. As we get back into the school routine, please make sure your child gets plenty of rest, eats a good breakfast, and packs a healthy snack for the morning. Homework packets are due on Friday for Spelling and Math. If they are late, they lose 10%, and I am seeing LOTS of no name papers. I hate to see all that hard work wasted, so please remind your child to put his/her name on every assignment. I will be gone on Friday to attend a conference to help other teachers, so I hope you have a great weekend, and I will see you on Monday!

Important Information 12-11-11

  • Mrs. Strausheim will be coming on Thursday to help our class make Christmas Crackers. This is an English tradition, which requires the use of old toilet paper and/or paper towel tubes. If you could please send at least one with your child by Wednesday, I would appreciate it.

·         We are working on stars and constellations in our Space unit. I need each student to bring a shoe box that we can paint to look like the night sky. We will be doing this on Thursday and Friday, so I need these by Wednesday as well.

·         In the spirit of giving, Secret Santa’s has been going very well. Thank you so much for helping your child participate in the spirit of giving. This week they should bring two items, (less than $1.00, on Mon, Tues or Wed), and then one final gift (for a total of 3) on Thursday (no more than $5.00) for the final unveiling of our gift givers. The class is really enjoying this, so if you are having a problem getting the gifts, have your child talk to me and we will make arrangements to have things for them to give.

·         We return to school on Tuesday, Jan. 3rd. At this time, we will be joined by Ms. Lori Carter. She is in her last semester of the teacher preparation program at UNC. She will be doing her 16 week final student teaching experience in our classroom. As the year progresses, you will see Ms. Carter take more responsibility for teaching, planning and communicating with you, under my supervision. She will be writing a letter to introduce herself and her plans for the class when we return. Please help me in welcoming her to our class.

·         Our Christmas party will be on Friday, Dec. 16th in the afternoon. We will have snacks and watch a movie. Students may bring a pillow, blanket, etc for the movie and snack to share if they so choose. We will be done with the movie and begin cleaning the room about 2:45. We need to have the room in tip-top shape before break so students will be bringing home water bottles, extra items from their desks, papers, etc.

·         Spelling and Math packet homework is due on Thursday this week. I want to make sure all assignments are turned in. Students who have missing work will be using our party time to catch up. I was gone Friday, so a list of missing assignments will be coming home today. It is the responsibility of the student to see me if he/she needs an additional copy of the work.

Teacher's Notes: 12-6-11

Dear Parents,

This promises to be a very busy time at school, so please take a few moments to read the newsletter and communication that comes home with your child. You may notice an increase in homework, especially in the area of Math as we really can't stress the importance of knowing those facts facts by heart enough.

Secret Santa's are going well, and it is terrific to see the joy and excitement on the student's face when they receive that small treat. Thank you for allowing them to participate in this fun activity. Next Wednesday, we will be doing a special project, so please send an old shirt to school that your child can get dirty. In addition, we are in need on a shoebox for each child for a project in our space unit. These last few days before break will fly by, and I hope you all have some time to rest, relax and enjoy the season with family and friends.

Happy Holidays!

Ms. B.

 About Ms. Bridgmon

Greetings! My name is Nikki Bridgmon, but to most kids I'm just Ms. B. I am one of the 3rd/4th grade teachers at University Schools. While this is my first year here, it is my 8th year teaching, and my 3rd year teaching in a 3rd/4th multi-grade class. I received my B.S. degree from the University of Wyoming (Hopefully nobody will hold that against me), and went on to earn my M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Arizona. I also completed my National Board Certification in Oct. 2010. I am married to Clay Fuller, who is full time with the Army National Guard, and we have a son, Nate, who will be an 8th grader this year. We also have 2 large black dogs who love to play and eat. In my spare time when I'm not teaching, grading papers, or coming up with "messy" projects for my students, I love to ski, read, travel, watch movies, do yoga, and most especially shop (shoes being a particular favorite). I am so excited to be here at University Schools where we can create a child centered educational opportunity that encourages high learning and behavioral expectations, while fostering the creativity and fun that make learning a truly wonderful experience for each child. I don't beleive in a one size fits all approach to education, and I am grateful to be working in an environment which celebrates that. It is my goal to have students leave each day with a smile, and asking "what are we doing tomorrow?" I am passionate about children and their learning, and I can't wait to begin the journey.

Happy Halloween to everyone!

We had such a nice parade and party today. A big thank you to all the parents who brought treats and treasures to share. I think we had the best party at school. Just a couple of reminders.

-We will not have Spelling words this week since we have PLP presentations, and the computer lab is being used by Art this week.

-Please send appropriate clothing for the weather. Recess is s much more fun if children are dressed well. Also, students need to head to the playground in the morning and wait with the class to come in. I'm not always in the room, and we want to make sure students are supervised at all times.

-We are doing lots of end of the trimester assessments this week, so please have your child eat a good breakfast, be on time and get plenty of sleep. These tests are one way we look for focus areas next trimester.

-Have a wonderful and safe Halloween.

Greetings All,

What an amazing Spirit Week we've had so far. It is so wonderful to be in a school with such pride. The students and I have truly enjoyed all the fun activities. We also were lucky to have Chief Garner of the Greeley Police Department join us and to have parents and grandparents as guests for our Author's tea. We will have one of these each quarter, so hopefully most of you can make at least one. The remainder of the week has us spending time "interviewing" our book buddies, sharing our history presentation, and seeing all the things we learned first hand as we go to the Greeley Museums. I can't beleive it is already October. They year is flying by with fun and learning. Make sure to ask about our "noun" songs...

Have a super special Bulldog Thunder Day,

Ms. B.

Field Trip!

Our Greeley History Field Trip is fast approaching. We will be going to the Meeker House, the Greeley Museum and Centennial Village. We leave school at 8:30 Oct. 7th, and we will return about 2:30. Please make sure to have a sack lunch, a water bottle and good walking shoes. This should be a fun filled day of learning!
